The election of 2010 – at the mid-point of President Obama’s first term – should serve as a powerful lesson for all of us. Here is a brief, simplified history of politics in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Shortly after President Obama’s election, the leadership of the Republican Party announced its primary legislative goal – “Make Obama a ONE-TERM President!” By their actions, they demonstrated total commitment to their strategy – obstructing any efforts to legislate the change Obama pledged to deliver.  No change means Obama failed!

In 2009, the Tea Party absorbed the media. They seemed determined to eliminate all government – not just the elected Democratic Party majority.  They rallied around some libertarian principles, called for no taxes, no government regulation, and the supremacy of individual rights.  There were tinges of racism, charges of socialism, and obvious intent to demonstrate their frustration with a bad economy and bad government.  They were loud and brazen, outspoken and fervent…not easily overlooked.

The most conservative elements of the Republican Party saw an opportunity to exploit the Tea Party enthusiasm and in the process build a coalition of political discontents.  Some argue that the Tea Party “won” the 2010 election.  Most say that is a “bit of a stretch.”  Time will tell!   It is clear, however,  many conservative legislators aligned with the Tea Party and perhaps, owe their election to the Tea Party as much as their Republican support.  Consequently,  the Republican Party struggles to find its identity.

Now the elections of 2012 are upon us.  Many say this will be the most important election of the new millennium. There is work to be done!   Are you interested in politics and looking to join a group of progressive people?  Do you like to talk about politics and seek ways to influence lawmakers and elected officials?  Do you get weary of the “fair and UN-balanced” media that inundates us with lies, distortions, half truths, and misleading information?  Then you should consider becoming  one of the nearly 250 members of Foothills Democrats.  There you will find others who feel and think as you do!  There you can become an agent for "change to believe in!"

For more than a decade, members of Foothills Democrats have enjoyed opportunities to learn together, work together, and engage as political activists.  They gather for book discussions, to listen to “one of a kind” presentations by leading experts who know the issues, to meet with state and local leaders of the Democratic Party, and get to know the candidates for local, state and national elected offices.  If you are interested, it is easy to become a member and participate.  (Just go to Join Us in the menu at the left.)

As a member, you will receive invitations to participate in our events.  When there is a charge to attend, you will receive a discount.  Some events are open to the public and some events are closed to members only.  There is a three part purpose: (1) Learn about critical political issues from each other and invited experts; (2) Collaborate with other Democratic Party affiliated organizations; and (3) Support election of Democratic candidates.  (We also intend to have fun and enjoy the company of people who share our commitment.)

Foothills Democrats is a registered Political Action Club.  We depend on volunteers to plan and deliver our programs.  We engage in some fund raising activities and the money is used to support candidates, the Arizona Democratic Party, and Maricopa Democratic Party.  Our operations are funded entirely through the dues, gifts, and donations from benefactors.  (You may join on line by registering and paying dues.)
